Shopping for a gun safe isn’t easy. It’s hard enough looking for a professional gun safe that can offer the highest level of protection while still being affordable, but when you consider all the features that many safes offer these days, shopping for a safe can be a tedious endeavor. You’ll be comparing fingerprint locks to digital locks, measuring the dimensions of the safes to see if they’ll fit in your drawer, and whether or not they can be bolted down to the floor. You’ll also want to know if the safe can be accessed by anyone other than its owner, especially when it comes to children. And ultimately, you’ll want to know if the safe can actually do what it’s intended to do, and if it is indeed the best gun safe for the money.

We’ve seen almost everything the industry’s had to offer, from biometric wall safes to truck gun safes, and we’ve narrowed down the market to a handful of safes that you might want to consider buying, especially if you’re on a budget. Here are the best gun safes under 500:

Homegear 5 Rifle Electronic Gun Safe

  • CE and RoHS Certified
  • 4mm Steel Door, 2mm Walls
  • Includes Interior Lockbox

What We Liked

  • Great value
  • Keyless Entry
  • Adequate Spacing

What Needs Improvement

  • Build Quality
  • Lock entry

The Homegear 5 Rifle Electronic Gun Safe is a product worth checking out if you’re in the market for a safe that can store your rifles and keep them out of the hands of children. The safe features a solid steel construction with 4mm-thick doors, which are pretty standard when it comes to safes of this caliber. The real surprise, however, is that the Homegear is actually relatively inexpensive compared to safes in the same category.

The safe also features keyless entry and an interior lockbox, which we thought was awesome. Although the Homegear doesn’t necessarily have the superior build quality that comes with other safes in the same category, it seems like a worthy trade-off when you consider the price.

Viking Security Safe VS-50BLX Large Biometric Safe

  • 500 DPI Fingerprint Scanner and Keypad
  • Motorized deadbolt
  • Digital LCD Display
  • Sound Programmable
  • Integrated LED

What We Liked

  • Digital display allows for ease of use
  • Multiple methods of entry
  • Shelves offer better utilization of space
  • Includes anchor

What Needs Improvement

  • Glitchy fingerprint scanner
  • Size only fits handguns and small items

If you’re in the market for a medium-sized safe that offers adequate protection with ease of entry, the Viking VS-50BLX may be the perfect safe for you. The Viking features a 500 DPI biometric keypad and a motorized deadbolt for keyless entry. Its LCD display allows its users to program the various functions of the safe, including sounds, and the keypad can store up to 30 fingerprints. The Viking also features an integrated LED light inside of the safe for easy access in the dark. Although the various modes of entry may not matter depending on how you use the safe, the Viking certainly functions well enough as a standalone safe.

BARSKA Quick Access Biometric Rifle Safe

  • Holds up to three rifles
  • Biometric fingerprint scanner
  • Up to 120 fingerprints

What We Liked

  • Heavy
  • Footprint design
  • Easy installation
  • Accurate fingerprint sensor

What Needs Improvement

  • Must be bolted down
  • Size not adequate for large guns with modifications

If you’re looking for one of the best fingerprint gun safes on the market, the BARSKA rifle safe should probably be on your list. This safe can hold up to three rifles (or more, depending on how big your guns are) and its biometric scanner can store up to 120 fingerprints, making it one of the best safes on the market in terms of functionality and user-friendliness. The safe itself has a sturdy steel construction with pry-resistance, and also features anchor points which allow the safe to be bolted down to hard surfaces.

The biometric scanner registers fingerprints with amazing accuracy, and the “footprint” design saves a lot of space in homes and offices. The only drawback is that the safe is advertised to carry up to four rifles, which is a little generous considering that the safe can only fit maybe two to three moderately-sized rifles at best. You’ll also have to bolt the safe down even if you’re not worried about theft, considering that the safe could tip over when full. Still, the BARSKA is a worthy investment if you’re looking for a entry-level rifle safe.

Paragon 8 Rifle Safe Cabinet

  • Stores up to 8 guns
  • 18-gauge solid steel
  • Interior locking cabinet
  • Pre-drilled anchor holes

What We Liked

  • Comparable to $1200+ gun cabinets
  • Good spacing
  • Heavy door construction

What Needs Improvement

  • Lack of pry-resistance
  • Functions as a gun cabinet rather than a safe

The Paragon rifle safe cabinet is best suited for those who possess a good amount of firearms, but who would rather only have the bare essentials. To call it a safe, in a technical sense, would be inaccurate considering the way it’s constructed. Although the Paragon does feature 18-gauge solid steel along the interior and exterior of the cabinet and pre-drilled anchor holes for easy mounting, the safe itself isn’t completely pry-resistant. However, it does function well as a child-deterrent, and its weight alone will definitely give burglars a hard time if they ever intend on trying to take the entire safe altogether.

One major flaw with the Paragon is that it is essentially required to mount it against the wall, since the door is significantly heavier than the housing and could cause the cabinet to tip over. But for the money, it’s hard to complain.

Stack-On 16 Gun Security Safe with Combination Lock

  • Stores up to 16 firearms
  • Fully carpeted interior
  • 3-number combination lock
  • Removable shelf and organizer included

What We Liked

  • Sturdy design
  • Drill-resistant solid steel plate behind lock
  • Organizers and shelves offer better space utilization
  • Carpeted interior

What Needs Improvement

  • Not fireproof
  • Tedious entry

The Stack-On 8 Rifle Safe is an absolute behemoth of a safe. Although it doesn’t feature any fancy features, such as biometric fingerprint scanners, digital keypads, or interior lighting, it does provide its owners with a moderate level of security at an affordable price. The Stack-On features a combination lock that works just as well as any other, along with a spacious, carpeted interior that will prevent scratching, and removable organizers and shelves that would suit any gun owner.

The only downside to owning this safe is that combination locks aren’t for everyone, and you may want to have something that is a little more practical during a stress situation.
